Climate Outlook September 2023 - February 2024


The Long Dry season commences mid-August and will last till begin December. The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is north of Suriname above the Atlantic Ocean

El Niño condition continues this season. Drier and hotter conditions will prevail with a high likelihood of high temperatures. The hot and dry season will likely be intense.

Above-to-normal conditions are expected for the period.

It is highly probable that the temperature is higher than the average.



Monthly Rainfall August 2023

The rainfall map for August 2023 showed that the monthly rainfall varied between 58.7mm-136.4mm. The Coastal area and partly of the southwestern part of Suriname has experienced relatively wetter conditions than the other parts of the country. Notably, the southeastern part was relatively drier.

The daily rainfall graph for August 2023 showed that the daily rainfall varied between 0.02 mm – 21.8 mm. August 2023 was a dry month.

Discussion

El Niño will continue to manifest till February 2024. High temperatures are expected for the season and it will be mostly drier and hotter. Heatwave occurrences will be frequent this season. Rainfall is expected to be below normal. However, rainfall will increase by the end of November and there will be a decrease in heatwaves.



Climate Advisory

El Niño conditions will manifest this season. It is expected that the dry season will be hotter and drier. Be prepared for less water availability, hot and dry days. Preserve water for agriculture activities and keep animal shelters cool. Drink enough water during the day.
