Discussion
The La Niña condition will continue this season from June to August. May and June are statistically the wettest months of the year. Heavy and frequent showers will occur during the season as usual. The season will be wetter than normal, and the flood potential is still high. The saturated soil will no longer be able to absorb the rainwater, and excessive rainwater will result in flooding, especially in the low-lying areas. The seasonal rainfall from February to April 2022 was higher in the hinterland than in the coastal area, and has exceeded the long-term seasonal rainfall average for both. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates above Suriname towards the North during this season, accompanied by normal to heavy rain in those areas. The temperature is forecast to be warmer in the eastern part of the country.
Climate Advisory
Flooding risk is still present during this period. The saturated soil will no longer be able to absorb the rain water. The low-lying areas are vulnerable to flooding. Maintain drains in the neighborhoods and around crop beds. Plant crops on raised beds and house animals on high grounds and or on raised pens.
