Climate Outlook January 2024 - June 2024


The short rainy season commenced begin December and will last until February. The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates above Suriname towards the South during the rainy season.

The temperature and humidity in Suriname are usually pleasant, during the wet season. However, there is a concern for both short-term and long-term drought. Moreover, there is still a possibility of heavy rainfall, which increases the potential for moderate to high levels of flooding.

A drought warning for the northeastern part of the country by the end of March.

The Maximum temperature for November 2023 varied from 33.8 – to 36.6 0C. South West of Suriname experienced the highest maximum temperature of 36.6 0C.
The rainfall map for December 2023 showed that the monthly rainfall varied between 21.5 mm and 187.1 mm. The Northwest of the country experienced low monthly rainfall. December 2023 was a dry month.



Discussion

El Niño conditions are still present. The rainfall is expected to be below normal than usual. However, flood potential is still present during the rainy season and there is a drought concern by the end of March.

Climate Advisory

Be prepared for the rainy season. Keep maintaining the irrigation systems and canals and keep animal shelters high and dry. Drought concerns by the end of March, therefore conserve water.
