Climate Outlook for Suriname

April - September 2023


The short dry season ends mid-April and transitions into the wet season and will last till the mid of August. The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will migrate to the North during this season above Suriname.

The La Niña condition moved into its neutral phase with a possibility to transit to an El Niño condition.

The season will be wetter than usual.

July – September (JAS) 2023
The season will be wetter than normal at the eastern part and at the western part according to climatology.

The temperatures are expected to be according climatology.



Monthly Rainfall 2023

The daily rainfall for March 2023 varied between 1.1 mm – 9.3 mm on a daily basis. The majority of the rainfall was concentrated at the South Western part of Suriname. Drier conditions were at Northern part of the country.

Discussion

The La Niña condition transits into a neutral phase with a possible transition to an El Niño phase for July to August 2023. Drier condition applies for the Northern part of Suriname with rainfall varying between 1.1mm – 2.2 mm for March 2023. The wet season started mid-April and rainfall occurrences are expected to increase with time. Flooding potential still exists since May and June are the wettest months statistically. Wetter conditions are expected for April – June 2023. It is likely that July to September will be wetter to normal. The temperatures are expected to be cooler to normal for April –June and according to climatology for July –September.

Climate Advisory

The season will be wetter than usual. Be prepared for the wet season and for potential flooding during the rainy season.Therefore keep on maintaining drains in the neighborhoods and around crop beds. Plant on raised beds and place animals on higher grounds.
