Discussion

A weak La Niña is expected to continue this season from April to May and will likely go into the neutral phase. The Long Rainy season started in mid-April, and more heavy and frequent showers will occur during the season as usual. However, the expected precipitation totals will be at least according to climatology. The absorption capacity of the soil decreases due to the wetter conditions of the previous season. The potential of flooding is still present when excessive rainwater which not drained quickly will flow to the low-lying areas and cause temporary flooding. The hinterland experienced more rainfall than the coast for the previous two months. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates from the South to the North above Suriname, accompanied by rain in those areas. The temperature is forecast to be cooler to warmer across the country.

Climate Advisory

Flooding risk is still present during this period. The absoption capacity of the soil is reduced due to the wetter condition of the previous season. The low-lying areas might experience flooding. Maintain drains in the neighborhoods and around crop beds. Plant crops on raised beds and house animals on high grounds and or raised pens.
